Award for Best International Short at Edinburgh

Princess Margaret Blvd. was honoured at the 63rd Edinburgh International Film Festival by winning the festival’s newly established Best International Short Film Award. The selection jury commented on the film:

"Princess Margaret Blvd is a brilliant, complex, emotionally honest and intense piece of cinema. An outstanding expression of film craft, compassion and performance - every element in this film serves its story of the decline of the mind through dementia."

All short fiction films under 50 minutes duration from a non-UK country of origin were eligible for this new award, which is intended to affirm the Festival's long-established support of international short filmmakers and to provide profile and encouragement for the feature filmmakers of the future. Short film art is extremely important to EIFF both as a feature film training ground and as an art form in its own right, and the Festival looks forward to watching its international short filmmakers benefit from this new prize category. The full awards announcement from EIFF 2009 can be read here.

Write-up in Winnipeg's Uptown Magazine

Uptown Magazine | Aaron Graham (www.uptownmag.com)

"Princess Margaret Blvd., a short by Toronto native Kazik Radwanski, was tough to take at times, as its elderly female protagonist is deep in the throes of Alzheimer's. Throughout the course of its 14 minutes it remains brutally frank about the ravages of time. The more I've thought about it, the more it's become a highlight of the festival."

New Rebel Cinema: Corduroy Magazine reports from Park City

http://www.corduroymag.com/events/new-rebel-cinema-corduroy-reports-from-park-city

"Last week in Park City there was a sense that the best of independent cinema wasn’t being selected for the main stages of Sundance. It was in the micro-cinemas of Sundance’s fifteen-year-old bastard child the Slamdance Film Festival and the New Frontiers section of Sundance that one could find ground-breaking cinema. It was programmers like Slamdance’s Paul Sbrizzi and New Frontiers’ Mike Plante that were introducing audiences to the most exciting and original work at the festivals. Some Slamdance short highlights included the grand prize-winning narrative short film Princess Margaret Blvd. by Kazik Radwanski, a subjective portrayal of Alzheimer’s disease."

Reviews in Eye Weekly and Now Magazine

Eye Weekly | Adam Nayman (www.eyeweekly.com)

"What I've Lost might work as an alternate title for Princess Margaret Blvd., which features Gina Sylvester in an impressively unsentimental performance as an older woman struggling with the onset of Alzheimer's. Director Kazik Radwanski smartly delineates the experience of the disease by balancing naturalistic 35mm camera work against a tense, fragmented editing rhythm: the images have clarity even as they're slightly disconnected from one another."

Now Magazine | Barrett Hooper (www.nowtoronto.com)

"Gina Sylvester gives a touching performance in Princess Margaret Blvd., about a woman confronting the fears and frustrations of living with Alzheimer's."
